
Spain have been crowned FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup champions after defeating defending champions DPR Korea 4–3 on penalties in a dramatic final in Łódź, Poland, on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
The final finished 0–0 after 90 minutes and extra time, forcing the championship to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Laia López Becomes Spain’s Hero
Spain goalkeeper Laia López played a decisive role in the shootout, making two crucial saves as Spain converted four of their attempts to secure the title.
Her saves came against Choe Yon-A and Pak Il-Sim, allowing Spain to claim their second U-20 Women’s World Cup title. Their previous championship came in 2022 in Costa Rica.
A Closely Contested Final
Neither side was able to break the deadlock during regulation time.
Spain created opportunities in the second half, including an effort from Pau Comendador that required a save from DPR Korea goalkeeper Pak Ju-Gyong.
Spain also threatened during extra time, but DPR Korea’s defence and goalkeeper kept the score level until the final whistle.
DPR Korea Miss Out on Back-to-Back Titles
DPR Korea entered the final as the defending champions, having won the 2024 edition.
They were also attempting to become the first team to win consecutive FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup titles.
Despite losing the final, DPR Korea produced a remarkable tournament run. According to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, the team established a tournament record of 13 consecutive victories, stretching back to their 2024 championship campaign.
Spain’s Second U-20 World Cup Title
The victory gives Spain their second FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup trophy, following their 2022 triumph.
Several members of the Spanish squad had also been involved in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, when DPR Korea defeated Spain on penalties.
The 2026 tournament featured 52 matches and 180 goals, according to FIFA, with Poland hosting the competition.
