
Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have been crowned champions of the 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup after defeating Togo 4–0 in the final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday, September 27.
The victory completed a perfect tournament for Nigeria, with the Flamingos winning all five of their matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding just two.
Harmony Chidi Leads the Way
Captain Chidera Harmony was the standout performer in the final, scoring twice from the penalty spot.
Harmony opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Nigeria were awarded a penalty. She converted another spot-kick in the 35th minute, giving the Flamingos a 2–0 lead at half-time.
Flamingos Add Two More Goals
Nigeria continued to control the match after the break.
Oluebube Umejiaku increased the lead in the 67th minute, before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the scoring in the 90th minute to give Nigeria a 4–0 victory.
Five Wins From Five
The Flamingos’ route to the title included victories over:
Niger Republic — 5–0
Ghana — 4–2
Burkina Faso — 2–0
Côte d’Ivoire — 2–0
Togo — 4–0
Nigeria therefore finished the competition with 15 points from five matches, becoming the first team to win all its matches in the history of the WAFU-B U17 women’s tournament, according to TheCable.
Boost Ahead of World Cup
The WAFU-B title comes shortly before the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, scheduled for October 17 to November 8.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group B alongside North Korea, Puerto Rico and Poland.
The Nigeria Football Federation’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, congratulated the players and officials after the WAFU-B triumph and described the competition as useful preparation for the World Cup.
The Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, are expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday following their tournament victory.
